asciiCOM and asciiPRO Archiving SOFTWARE
Overview - Description - Details - Demo Download

Features and Benefits

Open Systems Approach

Regardless of the media used and the particular processing requirements of the individual client, the asciiCOM system, utilizing asciiPRO, processes all data in ASCII (American Standard Code of Information Interchange), an international industry standard which can be accessed by any number of applications computer operating systems. In this way, Computrex is able to provide its clients custom-optimized performance while at the same time maintaining a truly "open-systems" data format.

Optimized Performance

From its years of experience with electronic and data document management systems, Computrex realized there was significant performance advantages to be obtained for its clients by using high-speed indexing and compression techniques. For, just as no two companies information is stored in exactly the same way, the way they access it is also different, and requires specialized programming to optimize performance. Computrex has access to all programming information, specifications and documentation and can therefore provide custom software modules, tailored to meet exact specifications, with complete flexibility and scalability to meet any client's future information requirements.

Ease of Use

Computrex's asciiCOM viewing software was designed from the beginning to emulate many of the existing standards within organizations; thus viewing and retrieving information requires minimal operator training and intervention. In most cases, new operators are familiar with the asciiCOM system within a few hours, and can produce highly productive work in a matter of a few days.

Low Implementation Cost

Since asciiCOM is a Windows-based application, the Computrex C.O.L.D. solution is completely scalable. A client can start with a single stand-alone PC, and can grow all the way to a complex, heterogeneous system of mainframes, mini-computers and workstations. Thus, asciiCOM can be implemented on a small scale at low cost and later be extended and reorganized as new applications and saving opportunities are identified.

Computrex utilizes its processing software, asciiPRO, to organize, sort and consolidate the archived data in a manner that maximizes overall retrieval and distribution performance. Computrex service centres typically process the data as part of an overall service involving setting up of page formats, extracting and sorting various indices, and finally processing and inscribing the "viewing" files onto CD-ROM or other media for delivery to the client.

This service bureau approach insulates the user from high costs of under-utilized archiving facilities, personnel, and future potential systems obsolescence. AsciiPRO is usually not distributed along with asciiCOM, but is available for on-site licensing to large volume clients who may want to process their own data "in-house" as demand and costs justify.

Flexible Media Support

In a typical application, asciiCOM users are provided with their data on CD-ROM disks, which today provide the lowest storage costs, and are the most widely used and available optical media. CD-ROM also follows an international industry standard (ISO 9660) and therefore can be easily transported between various systems.

In cases where particular clients require the use of specialized WORM or M-O (Magneto Optical) disk media, these too are supported by asciiCOM and asciiPRO. For these clients, Computrex can also provide a unique Optical Disk Interface Software (ODIS) system which allows for complete data media transferability between various WORM and M-O drives and computer systems.

For very small volumes of data, optical media may not be a cost-effective solution. In this case, standard magnetic diskettes, or disk cartridges (i.e.Bernoulli) may be more appropriate. Of course, asciiCOM and asciiPRO support all these popular formats.
